The housefly (Musca domestica)
The fly is common in large numbers worldwide and is living together with us humans for thousands of years already. The fly that is mostly found in the house is the common housefly.
These obtrusive, stubborn and unpopular pests are annoying for people and domestic animals, but first of all, they’re noxious.
Houseflies mostly stay at places that must be considered unhygienic from a human point of view. They prefer waste, carcass, faeces and the manure heaps in rural zones. As a carrier, the housefly carries the noxious germs into the human living space. It sits on food and drinks, and this way the bacteria reach the human body.
It is proved that the fly is responsible for the spreading of infectious diseases. Their list is long and comprises among many other diseases also cholera, tuberculosis, typhoid, dysentery, polio and anthrax. Especially in southern countries the fly is very dangerous. As flies there are not harmed, because they appear in such masses, people have become used to them. The annoying pest is tolerated on the skin, flies to the eye and its germs settle on the mucous membranes. Thus, the pathogens can get directly into the human circulation. A very dangerous fly related to the housefly appears exclusively in Africa: the tsetse fly, the feared transmitter of the sleeping sickness.
If you want to catch or kill a fly, you have to react instantly - and still then you are too slow in most cases, because flies are always on their guard. With their innumerable compound eyes, flies see everything. They can look upward, downward, forward and to the sides simultaneously at all times. Thus, the fly has everything in its field if vision and notices every suspicious approach.
As the natural enemies are not enough to decimate the flies, it is absolutely necessary to fight them.
